BG Eateries

Anyone who lives anywhere near Bowling Green, KY has heard the myth that we have more restaurants per capita than any other city in the USA. I'm pretty sure that isn't true, but there is a bunch of restaurants around here and it seems like a new one opens every other day. With so much competition, I tend to assume that the ones who survive the first few months are pretty good. There's a little bit of everything here, unless you're looking for Korean. Hopefully somebody will fix that problem soon.

These restaurants don't qualify for a Countryside Food Ride because there's no countryside involved and there's nothing fun about riding through traffic to eat somewhere in town. But I thought it might be neat to start posting pictures of my favorite local eateries, especially since I'll need something to keep me busy over winter.

So, this page focuses on local establishments that are worth visiting. The pictures are from the GoPro, unless otherwise noted. The photos won't be great, but I hope to convey the general atmosphere of each place. No reviews, just pictures. I should mention that I tend to visit during off hours, so if the places look empty that's just because I think it would be creepy to feature a bunch of strangers in the photos.

ALPHA INDEX:

Home Cafe & Marketplace
VISITED:  Fall 2011

It's a small place, and they could use some extra room during the lunch rush!

In typical Cafe fashion, you order at the counter and take a seat.
Fried Green Tomato Pizza (to go).
Ciabatta Turkey Sandwich & Pasta Salad (to go).

BONUS PHOTOS:  Pizza aficionado extraordinaire [and my pizza oven coach] Aaron Harris joined me for lunch and snapped the following pictures. There are people who love pizza, and then there's Double-A-Ron...

Santa Maria Pizza.
Featuring San Marzano Tomatoes, Roast Beef, & Garlic Butter, it's just about as awesome as it sounds [and looks]. I know I said this page was just about pictures and no reviews, but I have to say Josh is a genius and this is one of the best places to eat in BG. For sure.
Oreo Pudding (to go).

Montana Grille / The Lunch Pail
VISITED:  Winter 2011/2012

Montana Grille is open for dinner only.
Certainly the most beautiful restaurant building in BG... and that bar is a fine place to watch the game!
The famous Jalapeno Cornbread is served when you sit down.
You can also ask for Ciabatta (that's sort of a secret).
A real Hickory Wood-fired Grill (they also have a Wood-fired Rotisserie).

Surf & Turf w/ Grilled Shrimp (everything wrapped in Bacon) + Steamed Broccoli & Caluiflower.
Same as above.
Heath Bar Crunch.

Fallout Dogs are also on the menu.

Jimmy D's Bar-B-Que
VISITED:  Winter 2011/2012

Jimmy D's Bar-B-Que is located right next to his old grocery store, which is now operated by Houcens as an IGA Crossroads.
There are no seats inside...
...but that's probably just to make more room for the BBQ.
Pretty much every kind of meat and poultry that can be smoked is available here.
Side Items are prepared and ready to take home and be reheated.
You can also order a hot sandwich or lunch plate.
Beef Brisket Plate (sans Sauce) w/ BBQ Beans & Potato Salad (to go).

Pork Chops w/ my Vinegar Dip.

Smokey Pig Bar-B-Q
VISITED:  Winter 2011/2012

This place is kinda famous. Legendary, if you will.

I'm pretty sure this is the only restaurant in town with a dining room that overlooks the river.

The best wings in town!

The Best of Shake Rag
VISITED:  Winter 2011/2012

It's a small place in the Shake Rag district with a surprisingly big menu.

Dunn's Barbeque (Franklin, KY)
VISITED:  Winter 2011/2012

It's a small place with a small menu a few blocks from the Franklin Town Square. It's not in Bowling Green, but the food is good enough that I had to include it. Combined with Wildfire BBQ & Grill, I say Franklin is a fine BBQ town!

Rib Plate with Coleslaw & Potato Salad.
